Back in March 2020, supermarket price comparison website mySupermarket closed up shop leaving savvy shoppers, many of which had used the service for more than a decade, to rely on other methods to cut their grocery costs.
For those that are unaware, mySupermarket was a simple, straightforward website that allowed shoppers to search for a grocery item and see how much it cost across 14 supermarkets. Knowing how to make the biggest savings for your food shop is a really big deal – in fact, using mySupermarket could save up to 30% on a shop which made it a real MoneyArk favourite if ever there was one. In May 2007, the supermarket comparison site received a £3 million investment from some huge venture capital firms such as Greylock Partners and Pitango but even that sort of backing couldn’t save them from their fate.
Now that mySupermarket has gone – are there any grocery and supermarket price comparison alternatives?
Our pick of mySupermarket alternatives
Well…that’s the thing. It’s not like we’re inundated with supermarket price comparison sites so unfortunately there aren’t many other options out there.
Trolley is probably the best MySupermarket alternative on the market right now. They compare over 130,000 products and 7,000 brands from supermarkets and shops across the UK and in our testing do a really good job at displaying the results. For a small team that isn’t making a profit – this is a really good tool for the average grocery money saver!
Comparasaurus is a free, simple app that comes on iOS and Android to compare prices from Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose, Ocado, Aldi, Lidl and Iceland. It’s pretty simple to use: Just type the name of a product and you get a nice view of how much it costs in each supermarket – when it works… It’s a really nice idea but on the few searches we did; we came up with some issues such as missing items and errors. Not ideal but one to keep an eye on as it progresses.
EDIT: We’re seeing Comparasaurus not working more and more so it may be one to avoid for now while they fix the bugs in the system.
Supersmartlist is another app that tells you if you can buy cheaper alternatives from 7 supermarkets. The app is currently in beta testing mode but it seemed much further along in its development than Comparasaurus when we tried it. We especially liked the SmartList feature that recommends what to buy in your shop based on your previous orders and what other similar shoppers are buying.
If you’re looking for a mySupermarket alternative, there’s only one that we tested out there that actually fits the bill – and that’s the LatestDeals app. Launched in late March 2020 on both iOS and Android, the app houses a price comparison tool for 6 major supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose and Iceland. It even has deals and vouchers to redeem at checkout. It’s free and very simple to use for even the most technologically challenged amongst us. Simply search for the product you want to check the prices on, and you’ll be given a list so you can see the cheapest place to shop. The team at LatestDeals have made a quick video to show you how it works:
It’s still a little rough around the edges and doesn’t quite have all the features that mySupermarket once did but it’ll do for us!
Which? supermarket reviews
Which? does run its own supermarket analysis which compares the online prices of between 60 and 100 branded products at Asda, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose. While this isn’t anywhere near as useful as mySupermarket, it does give you an idea each month of how the big supermarket chains compare and which is cheapest.
Compare supermarket prices for your grocery shop manually
The boring, and not really recommended option is to use the internet to check for prices directly. This is a truly mammoth task as it’s something you’ll need to do every time you shop. I think there’s a better use of time than this to save money – not to mention the damage that much scrolling and clicking would do to your general well-being! If you’ve got any other suggestions for alternatives to mySupermarket, let us know in the comments below and we’ll add it!
