Frequently Asked Questions - Car Insurance
Does Covid-19 impact car insurance policies?
If your driving distance increases or decreases as a result of a coronavirus, for example, as you now drive to work rather than use public transportation, or as you now work from home, you do not have to inform your insurer.
If you use your car differently now, and you think your driving pattern will remain the same in the future, update your details. A good example is if you plan to reduce your mileage over the next year. You might qualify for a better quote.
Does my affect my car insurance price?
A higher risk job title is reflected in a higher cost for insurance, so if you change your title to lower your price, make sure the alternative title accurately describes what you do.
A word of warning: do not lie. If you do, your policy may be invalidated.
My car is off the road. Do I still need insurance?
You do not need to have car insurance for your car while it is off the road if you have made a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN). However, you can still insure your car with laid up insurance, which protects it against fire and theft.
Can I drive another car with comprehensive cover?
The answer to that depends on your insurance policy and how much experience you have driving.
The ability to drive other cars comes with some fully comprehensive policies, but it's not a part of usual third party policy - or even third party, fire and theft - and is often excluded from policies for young or inexperienced drivers.
Make sure to check the policy documents to make sure, as often it's meant to be used only for emergencies, rather than everyday driving. If in doubt, call your insurer and ask.
